A NOTE FROM MATT

Hey all, and welcome to my website. Thanks to everyone for all the support over the years.

The answer to the question I am getting a lot…YES that IS me on SirusXM’s Siriusly Sinatra Channel. A number of years ago I completed a project for Concord Records that eventually did not get released (in favor of my Gershwin 100 recording). It was a full-length recording called “My Kind Of Sinatra”. Recent interest from SiriusXM has led to it being included in the regular rotation on the Sinatra channel, thanks to my old friend, and producer of the recording, Allen Sviridoff. Thanks to those of you who have reached out to me upon hearing it. It is, at the moment, not available commercially yet for purchase or download, but I am in the process of trying to make that happen. Stand by!

Also I am thrilled to say that I have partnered up once again with Ejazzlines to make many of my arrangements for Big Band and Pops Orchestras available for purchase. There are about 20 newly written original Big Band charts, as well as new “Remixed” versions of my most popular big band originals re-orchestrated and re-issued for a more practical instrumentation, written for 5 Saxes, 4 Trumpets, and 4 Trombones (5,4,4,Rhythm), however they can also be played by a “compact” big band instrumentation of 4 Saxes, 3 Trumpets, and 2 Trombones (4,3,2,Rhythm).

Lastly we have a new Big Band recording to be released soon! The project is co-fronted by my friend, and virtuoso trumpet artist, Jens Lindemann, along with my new JazzPops orchestra. We will be debuting the music live on Jan. 21 at Vibrato Jazz Club in L.A. Stay tuned for more info here as it becomes available

Hope to see you at one of my upcoming orchestra or jazz performances in the near future, and hope y'all have a great 2020!

Artistic Director and Conductor of the Hawaii Pops in Honolulu, HI (Retired)

Past Principal Pops Conductor of the Honolulu Symphony, the Hawaii Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony, and the New Hampshire Music Festival.

Award winning jazz performer and world renowned orchestra Pops conductor Matt Catingub wears many hats. The son of the great jazz vocalist and “Polynesia’s First Lady of Song,” Mavis Rivers, Matt, a proud pacific islander, was bestowed the Samoan Chief’s title of La`auli by King Malietoa Tanumafili II. At age 17 he performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, then toured Japan playing with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones, and Ruth Brown. From there Catingub joined the big bands of Louie Bellson and Toshiko Akiyoshi / Lew Tabackin. At age 21 he formed the Matt Catingub Big Band, with his mom as vocalist, and recorded several critically acclaimed albums with his mom. A few years later Matt made his solo singing debut at the Frank Sinatra Celebration at Carnegie Hall and then signed with Concord records recording a number of CD’s with his own band, and notably with the legendary Rosemary Clooney. Matt wrote and performed the music for the George Clooney film, “Goodnight and Good Luck,” appearing onscreen, as well as creating all the music on the Grammy winning soundtrack.

As a Pops conductor Matt has conducted for some of the most important Symphony Orchestras in the country, including the Nashville Symphony, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and the Symphonies of Columbus, Hartford, Omaha, and throughout Canada and Japan, and has conducted for artists as diverse as Diana Krall, Yes, Al Jarreau, Gladys Knight, Kenny Rogers, Take Six, Elvis Costello, Glen Campbell, and numerous others.

Significantly Matt has arranged the music in the orchestra libraries for a variety of artists such as Kenny Loggins, James Ingram, Boz Scaggs, the Righteous Brothers, Rosemary Clooney, Vertical Horizon, Natalie Cole, Toni Tennille, Michael McDonald, Dave Koz, Toto, Pat Benatar, and many many others.

Today Matt is considered to be, not only one of the premier jazz instrumentalists and vocalists, but is also at the forefront of a new and innovative movement to reinvent orchestra Pops into a more fun and accessible format, encouraging dancing and loose fun, within a more informal and contemporary setting.
